TIFF images in Quark in Win98

Seems to be a bug in Quark printing directly to postscript printer (not a problem when saving as EPS)
where get poor resolution TIFF images.
Fix:
Choose very poor resolution in Photoshop under Image -> size -> Resolution (like 100 dpi)
Do not allow the image to be resampled such that number of pixels and file size remains the same
Compensate for this in Quark by reducing the scale on the image.

The preview will be of higher quality and so will the printer output.
Test on text that has been placed on the TIFF image

Color management in Photoshop and Quark

Turn off as much as possible.

Photoshop:
File -> Color Settings -> RGB setup
Choose Apple RGB and uncheck Montior sRGB
File -> Color Settings -> Profile Setup:
Probably Ok to embedd profiles in CMYK, Grayscale, Lab also, but we exclusively use RGB
Ask When Opening allows you to know when the nasty sRGB profile has been embedded in an image - it should be converted to RGB.

Quark:

Edit -> Preferences -> Efi Color
        Disable use of Eficolor

Setup Godzilla for Printing (or any other HP5000 series printer)

In order to access all the features of this printer, the correct software drivers must be installed on the computer
printing to it.

Download and install the correct software on your computer:

Copy the Zip file /em3/pc/dls/pcstuff/hardware/hp5000n.zip  which contains the necessary drivers.
                                                                              hp4000n.zip for HP4000 printer

 1.Unzip files into temporary directory
 2.Open Printers directory
 3.Click on Add Printer
4.Specify \\SATURN\godzilla as path to printer or \\JUPITER\godzilla
 5.Click Have Disk
6.Click Browse and locate above temporary directory
 7.Choose hplj5k.inf
8.Specify HP5000 Series PS driver (not PCL drivers)

Installation should then proceed. After installation:

 1.Open printers directory
2.Right click Godzilla printer and choose properties
 3.Choose Postscript tab
4.Choose "Archive format" for Postscript output format

Now choose General tab click Print Test Page to check installation

Problems printing from PC to Saturn printers

The Samba Server fails to remove print files and sometimes fills up the disk, thus preventing further printing
log on to saturn and check disk usage with "df"
if necessary, delete files in /var/spool/public (spool directory for samba server)

Printing Transparencies on Splash

Set everything to "portrait"
Select "bypass" tray for paper source
Select "tabloid" for paper size

This works for Illustrator - rotations and cropping caused by "landscape" simply screw things up

Printing to Splash from PC (e.g. from Photoshop or Quark)

Install proper printer driver:
    get file splash-v60.zip
This is an Adobe postscript driver
make temporary directory and unzip contents
    run setup program therein
specify \\SATURN\GRAPHIC for the remote printer
    choose splash model 5790

   For version 4 drivers:
        open "Printers" folder in Win95
        select "Add Printer"
        specify "Network Printer"
specify \\SATURN\GRAPHIC  (or can browse the network - best to have jupiter defined in your lmhosts file)
        specify "have disk"
specify directory where you unzipped the splash.zip
specify "Splash Regal v4.0" for the driver
try a test print and cross your fingers

Actually, it may be better to completely disable color matching and just let the printer do everything.  See above
about color management.  1/00

Set up printer driver for color matching:
Screens have changed for v. 6.0 driver, but concepts are similar
