The final paper should be an in-depth review of the particular topic chosen, concentrating on the structural aspects of the topic. You will need to read the appropriate primary literature as well as any relevant reviews - the paper should not be merely a re-writing of a published review! The paper should include an introductory section that describes the biological context and a concluding section that discusses what questions remain unanswered.
Specific guidelines:
1) An outline of the paper is due Fri.,
Dec. 5th. The paper is due on Fri., Dec. 19th.
2) Maximum of 10 double-spaced pages
(can be shorter) excluding figures and references. Place the references
and figures at the end.
3) If previously published figures
do not suffice to illustrate a discussion point, you are encouraged to
make your own figures.
4) The paper and figures should be
thoroughly referenced.
5) Aim for high information content,
i.e.,
write succintly and clearly - good practice for writing a manuscript describing
your own research.
6) If you use color figures, provisions
will be made to print the final version of the paper on the Splash color
printer in the Skirball Institute.
7) If you have general questions about
your chosen topic, contact S. Hubbard (hubbard@saturn.med.nyu.edu),
who will refer you to the appropriate faculty member for consultation.
Outline:
The purpose of the outline is to ensure that the paper will contain the appropriate breadth and depth of discussion on the particular topic chosen. The faculty will review the outlines and provide feedback. The outline should be 1-2 pages in length.
