The Tahiliani Lab leads exciting projects focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying the maintenance of DNA methylation patterns, how these mechanisms are perturbed in disease, and how DNA methylation preserves genomic stability.

Mamta V. Tahiliani, PhD
Principal Investigator
Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology

Dr. Tahiliani joined NYU Langone in January 2011. During her graduate work with Dr. Anjana Rao at Harvard University, she studied the dynamic nature of covalent chromatin modifications. In collaboration with Dr. Yujiang Shi, she demonstrated that SMCX is a novel histone demethylase with a role in neuronal gene regulation. More recently, Dr. Tahiliani discovered that the enzyme TET1 catalyzes the conversion of 5-methylcytosine (5mC) to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) in mammalian DNA. She showed that 5hmC is present in the genome of mouse embryonic stem cells and that 5hmC levels decrease when embryonic stem cells differentiate.
