Using the Microtek ArtixScan 4000tf:

Scanning a single
35mm slide.

Start the application Photoshop and open the SilverFast scanner
interface application. If the software cannot find the scanner restart
the computer after checking that the scanner is on and connected to the
computer through
the firewire port. |
 |
The slide feeder has 2 arrows on the top left. Postion
these arrows pointing left and load the slides in such a way as to allow
any
words or
letters in the image to be readable. |
 |
Push the slide feeder into the slot on the front of the scanner. The
arrows should face upward and go in first. Push until the feeder is
running on it's rails. Once in place the feeder will move on it's own. |
 |
Shift-click on the reset value button to reset all the values to default.
This clears the settings from the previous user and insures that you will
set the values that are correct for your scan. |
 |
Select the image overview button. |
 |
Pick the regenerate thumbnails option. |
 |
Click on the image you want to scan from the overview and click OK. The
Artix Scanner will generate a scan and create a preview. |
 |
Use these buttons to turn the image the way it needs to be oriented. |
 |
Select the general tab in the Silverfast application and set the values
like those pictured left. |
 |
Select the frame tab and set the options like those pictured here
if you are scanning a colored image.
If the image is greyscale
set the
scan type to:14->8Bit Greyscale.
Set Filter to None unless you want to apply one of the filter options.
This will take some experimentation on your part. |

Next, you will use the ScanPilot, the ArtixScan wizard function, to acquire
the image. If the ScanPilot is not open click the red airplane to make
it open and active. |
 |
Once you see the ScanPilot control, set the plane icon to the top by
clicking the top panel in the ScanPilot palette and then hit the play button.
Read and follow all instructions as the ScanPilot moves through the
scanning steps.
The Output Scale palette should be set to 1000 pixels in the x-axis
for slides going into Powerpoint presentations.
The Output Scale pallette should be set to 4000 pixels in the x-axis
for slides being printed out on a high-res printer(Not from PowerPoint). |
After the scan is complete the Silverfast application will
disappear and the scanned image will open as a untitled file in Photoshop.
All that
remains is to save this file into the filesytem and move it to your computer. |

Orient the negative holder so the molded arrows are on top and point
left. Unlatch
and open the negative holder. Rotate the negative so you can read the lettering
on the
edges.
Place the
35mm
negative
in
the
negative
holder
being careful to align the guides. Close and latch the hollder shut. |

Push the negative feeder into the slot on
the front of the scanner. The arrows should face upward and go in first.
Push until the feeder is running
on it's rails. Once in place the feeder will move on it's own. |

If the negative looks washed out don't worry. You will correct this.
Set
the film type. |

Click the mouse on an image to select it for acquisition. The scanner
will create a prescan. |

Once you see the ScanPilot control, set the plane icon to the top

Once you have reset the frame and hit return(be patient) the washed
out quality will leave the image as the exposure is properly set. Further
adjustments can be made in the Gradation Curves dialogue palette that
appears next.
The Output Scale palette should be set to 1000 pixels in the x-axis
for slides going into Powerpoint presentations.
The Output Scale pallette should be set to 4000 pixels in the x-axis
for slides being printed out on a high-res printer(Not from PowerPoint). |
After the scan is complete the Silverfast application will disappear

your name on the desktop. And then, give a general description as the
name for the scans. This name will be used as a base name and incremented.
Also, you may want
to set the "Start with No:" to one on the first scan set. On the Macintosh the filesystem path is
(Macintosh
HD->Users->DMC_user-> Desktop->yourfolder)
Where "yourfolder" is the folder you created on the desktop.

After the scans are complete the Silverfast application will
display the batch-end dialog. Dismiss the dialog and the software will
be ready to begin again. Once you have completed all your scanning all
that remains is to move your folder to your computer. |
