Administrative Notes from
Mike Lewis (4/23/03) See also obsolete list of vendor contacts from ~2000 COMMON SENSE STUFF: If a nitrogen tank is emptied, order a replacement – T.W.Smith 718-388-7417 ext 2, account number (customer number) 36988. Order an “LS-160” liquid nitrogen tank, and be sure the empty is moved over for them to pick up when the new one is delivered the next working morning. (last order 5/21/03 ) For microscope problems you don’t understand call FEI for phone support: 800-432-1734 FEI CM200 FEG (system id D787, engineer: Garvin Hom , last PM: 2/14/03 ) FEI CM12: (system id D684, engineer: Bruce Kline, last PM: 5/23/03 ) The phone cord is long enough to reach the EM, so that you can be at the scope while talking to FEI. Follow up until it is either fixed or turned into a service call. Don’t walk away from a mystery problem. It may turn into a disaster. Clean up any mess you find. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. (There has been someone’s negative stain mess left on a bench since 5/15). Recover your stuff from the EM suite. Don’t leave it lying around. Throw out any unlabeled stuff you find lying around. If labeling is a hassle then keep items on a labeled tray or in a drawer so that no one else throws them away. ONGOING: Monthly maintenance tasks: 1. Bleed condensed water from the pneumatic pressure ballast tank. ( last 5/21/03 ) 2. Top up liquid Nitrogen in all 3 EM storage Dewars . ( last 5/21/03 ) 3. Make up fresh developer (or only as needed if usage is infrequent). Fixer & D-19 are stocked at D.M. Carlick , next to the med center bookstore on 29 th street , and we have an open account there under “Mike Lewis” (charges to our NYU EM-MTA operating account). Each microscope is serviced by FEI every 6 months. They call to schedule them. We make sure each PM includes microscope alignment. These are saved to a PC file) - so that only minor alignments are needed between PM visits (& a recent file is available recover from bizarre user induced states). Both microscopes should be checked (daily if possible) to see if there has been a power glitch. The CM 12 usually restarts & would be found at 20keV with the gun poorly aligned. The battery in the memory board should be good enough to retain alignment settings, but they can be restored via CMonitor files if needed. The CM12 will need to be set to 120keV & have the gun re-aligned (using the gun alignment menu procedure). Every regular EM user needs to be familiar with gun alignment on the CM12. The CM200 is less likely to experience a problem, but if it does it will shut down & need to be re-started with the cold start procedure. CM200 gun alignments can be re-called via the FEG registers program. Computer files – will go on the EM Mac desktop (office) backed up by IT, as soon as retrospect remote is installed & EM Mac goes online. Whenever Wanda sends out a floor cleaning reminder we must make absolutely sure that they STAY OUT of the EM suite. Airflow & temperature in the microscope rooms goes out of kilter a few times per year. This will be obvious from the room temperature or obvious audible high air flow. Call controls at 7-3764. For emergencies call 3-5275. EM orders are written up by Charlie. IMPORTANT : the account is EM-MTA . Financial matters are otherwise handled through finance (Georgia Giatros ): Budgeting for the fiscal year starting in September is done in MAY. Billing: (outside user rates were last reviewed for FY2003, none presently are outstanding) Within NYU, outside Skirball, an IOI should be sent through finance. Outside NYU we send an invoice. If the Balzers vacuum system isn’t running, reset the breaker (panels in back, last done 5/28/03 ). The CM200 IDE system can drive a vibration (felt on the CM200 table). To fix, log on the IDE & toggle on the frequency filter per the posted instructions. The IDE settings are otherwise fine. ONE TIME JOBS & EQUIPMENT STATUS: (may finish a few before leaving) The CM200 PC needs to be backed up. Per Bill’s suggestion the disk could be removed to another machine & copied for safe-keeping. The sonicator leak repair needs to be tested (RTV should cure until 5/29 before water is added). Tomography: backup SGI backup system (MARS) needs to be connected to the CM200 and tested. Oxford holders: Seth Darst’s holder (065) needs to be drift tested & have the jewels adjusted to minimize drift (a good post-Doc learning exercise). The case for the holder is at Rockefeller. Skirball holder 121 has an open heat circuit (at the connector?), which is a pain to fix since connector wires must be soldered with a tiny point under magnification – and may not have slack in the holder stem. 121 had excellent low temp drift performance when last tested. Skirball holder 110 is fine. Replacement Oxford grid clips cost hundreds of dollars EACH – don’t lose them. Spare parts are in the Gatan & Oxford bench drawers (nearest diffractometer room). Digital micrograph CM12 magnification calibration needs to be done, with calibration grids at eucentric height & at typical working focus. Current calibrations are unreliable. The DM manual is on the PC desktop & also in notebook hardcopy at the PC. Data outside of the Stokes lab: Shihua’s micrographs are still on my desk, for documentation & filing. Some of Peijun’s & most of Chen’s data are in the EM suite & need to be filed. Mike’s old data is with Dan’s in the SGI room, where most of Peijun’s notebooks are also filed. The Linux PC (Compaq SP700 550Xeon/scsii workstation system), KVM switch, and T10/100 switch in the SGI room are EM property. NOTES: Older pieces of equipment (vacuum pumps, controllers, etc.) stored in the EM suite have tape labels indicated whether or not they are in working order. If the Besseler 45 MX enlarger in the second EM darkroom ever needs to be re-located, there is an identical unused enlarger table in the shared darkroom on the 3 rd floor hall. The Denton DV-502 dimensions are 27.5” deep x 30.5” wide. There is a re-circulating water connection and enough space available in the X-Ray lab next to the hall door. The system belonged to John Thomas in the Biochemistry department & he can answer any questions about this machine. Due to turnover, always call companies to get the current contact person. |
